I suffered through 3 summers of using this mower through shear idiocy and stubbornness. It was very heavy, hard to turn and maneuver. It only would mow less than a quarter of an acre. The lack of cord was nice and it would turn on very easily, but overall I was glad to be rid of that beast.

Battery charged right away and used in the lawn mower the morning after I got them. The lawn mower probably didnt need the second set but I panicked when not making it through my large lawn in one charge on the original set. My grass had gotten pretty high and was the first mowing of the year. Since I have gone without the second set each time. But, I am still glad I got them.

Neuton Battery Electric Lawn Mower Review

Neuton Battery Electric Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was committed to purchasing an electric lawnmower.Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options and even fewer reviews so was hard to decide!Ultimately went with the neuton and have been very happy. It is extremely light and easy to maneuver and turn which is great b/c we have a couple of hills and narrow spaces on our lawn.I was worried b/c it is more narrow than some mowers (maybe 14"?) but that hasn't been a problem at all; in fact, it makes many parts of the yard easier to mow.Charges quickly and we haven't had any battery problems.Never ran out of charge on our small lawn (takes about 45").It is quiet (not noiseless, but I can cut early in the morning without waking the neighbors) and cuts well.I'm thrilled not to have a cord, and it is easy to start and stop.Haven't used the mulcher or any other fancy accessories (the local sales guy said not to bother with buying those).

I would buy this again without hesitation and would recommend to others.I didn't give it 5 stars only b/c there are so few cordless electric mowers to choose from in 2005 that I can't imagine this is yet the model of perfection, but for the average small lawn owner (like me), it's a great machine.

Addendum 7/2006: now in our second season and no complaints. We love this machine; it was a great purchase for us.
Addendum 9/2007: third season, great machine. Now that I've seen its durability, I would give this product 5 starts (Amazon won't let me change my original rating).
Addendum 6/2009: fifth season, still totally satisfied with this machine.Blade became "unbalanced" and needed repair in year 4.Battery still going strong (we keep it plugged in all year).

Put away your noisy, gas-powered hand-held trimmer and discover the easier way to trim and edge your entire property. With a gentle squeeze of the handlebar the machine springs to life, using a rechargeable battery that provides up to 1 hour of quiet trimming. At 35 lbs., the lightweight NEUTON Cordless Electric Trimmer is remarkably easy to maneuver, gliding up hills and over bumpy terrain to trim precisely around trees, shrubs, lamp posts, and all the hard-to-reach spots in your yard. It's an edger, too! With a simple twist, the NEUTON's trimmer head pivots to a 45 or 90 degree angle, so the nylon cords cut vertically, for edging right down to ground level. Neuton Trimmer/Edger Attachment For CE 6 Lawn Mowers Review

Neuton Trimmer/Edger Attachment For CE 6 Lawn Mowers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bummer that the previous reviewer had reliability issues with his Trimmer/Edger attachment. I bought mine with my Neuton 6.0 and it's worked fine, so seeing the other review, I felt I should mention how well it actually works.

And the answer is, very well. It's a powerful little trimmer, and the convenience of being able to just throw the switch on the handle of the mower to swap between mowing and trimming can't be beat. I use this to edge, and to hit tall grass/weeds near the dropoffs or fences where the mower "can't cut it."

The only downside is that it's not as easily maneuverable as a hand-held trimmer. Because it's mounted on one side of the mower, you may have to swing the mower around and reverse directions to be able to put the trimmer into the right spot. Not a big deal.

I have a nice gas trimmer as well, but it never gets used as this is so much more convenient, and no messing with gas/oil.

Toro Recycler (20") 159cc 2-in-1 Push Lawn Mower - 20323 Review

Toro Recycler 159cc 2-in-1 Push Lawn Mower - 20323
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If not, like those of us who have full-time jobs, and you'd actually like to take more than 1 inch off of your lawn each time you mow, you should buy a different mower.
I have owned this mower for only a month and it does indeed cut the lawn, but it does not recycle, nor does it bag.

The "recycler" simply slaps gobs of finely ground/pureed grass onto the walls of the deck until the blade becomes off-balance and begins to grind excessively until the engine starts bogging down.Of course this is terrible for the longevity of engine life.I have had to kill the mower after only 2-3 rows, 25ft long, to let the majority of the mulched/pureed grass drop out of the deck. Then begin again.

The "bagger" does basically the same thing, once the grass is mush, the mower tries to shoot it into the bag through a tiny hole which then gets clogged due to the extreme amounts of moisture and lack of space to actually push the grass to the back of the bag. Yes, I waited for a week of dry, hot summer sun, and still the same result.Plants retain moisture.

I am no nubie to mowing lawns either, I worked for a lawn care company for several years, we used Toro products, I like them, correction, I LIKED them (in regards to this product anyway). But I was let-down after purchasing this model.I am also a motorcycle mechanic so I know what is bad for engines.

If this mower had a side discharge it MAY have been a decent product, but who knows. The manual even claims to have a rear discharge chute/deflector, however the dealer had no clue about it and couldn't even find it in their database.

I'll let you know if that changes anything if they ever find it for me to test out.

Solaris S21HB 21-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Bag/Mulch/Side Discharge Lawn Mower Review

Solaris S21HB 21 inch 24-Volt Cordless Bag/Mulch/Side Discharge Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

I initially considered the "SP" version of this mower @ Home Depot...the only model they sell.If you have serious elevation changes in your yard, perhaps the self-propelled version is worthwhile [whether the front-wheel drive Solaris or its rear-wheel drive Epic & Utopia cousins].Otherwise, buy this model. You can't get this info from the Linamar website, but the self-propelled versions are 18# heavier; when you're trying to make a battery charge last, draining them via an extra drive belt to pull/push a [heavier] mower makes little sense.

This mower is solidly built, & the big wheels make it easy to push & quite maneuverable.I gave it a test run, then handed it off to the 16-year old who cuts my grass. No issues.I was particularly pleased to see how well it mulched, as I'm a big believer in leaving clippings to nourish the lawn. There was no clumping, & as long as we don't cut wet grass, I expect it to stay that way.

Other cordless mowers probably perform as well, though most have decks smaller than this one's 21" which means longer mowing time.I think the Solaris' brushless motor is a huge advantage, & expect great longevity.Ultimately, though, I rejected most other mowers because replacing their batteries was cumbersome or impossible; I think that's nuts. The Solaris batteries swap out in seconds.Mine lasted about as long as expected, covering 80% of my .4 acres. With the money I saved by skipping the self-propelled feature [& headaches], I bought a 2nd set of batteries & have power to spare. It's a great solution, & my neighbors--including one who just bought an $800 Honda to get a pushbutton start like mine--are jealous.

The cons are minor.Changing deck height requires moving 4 levers instead of 1...but I only do this a couple of times a season. The tone it emits on stopping is irritating [hold the bail down or pull the key to silence].Charger mechanical connections could be tighter.Overall, though, well-designed & well-built.

LAWNATRON GREEN 20-INCH 24-VOLT Cordless Electric Lawn Mower with Removable Battery with Mulch/Bag/Side Discharge Attachments / Battery Capacity Indicator - by GreenYard Keeper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was so excited to get my new Lawnatron battery mower this week. My husband and I thought we'd get another season out of a 10 year old John Deere gas mower, but it didn't make it.We have a little less than 1/2 an acre to mow and wanted to try a battery operated one because of all the no oil- gas convenience. (I do most of the mowing because my husband travels a lot).I did a lot of research online and we also went to Lowes and Home Depot and looked at what they have. We looked at a lot of mowers and the Lawnatron was the only battery model we saw that looked like a ordinary lawn mower, with some tweaks to use the battery instead of a gas engine.

Ordering online from Amazon was straight forward as always, and when I called Green Yard Keeper (the company that sells Lawnatrons) to make some special shipping arrangements, they picked up immediately and the woman I spoke with was friendly and very helpful - a good sign in my opinion.

First some comments about the mower:
For one thing it has a well built steel mower deck which I like because I do bang the mower into things sometimes and I read online that the plastic ones can crack occasionally. It has a safety lock key (we have small kids) but I like that it's up on the handle so you don't have to reach down to use it. After the key is in, just pull up the handle and it's on - it just doesn't get any easier than that which is definitely what I was looking for!It is a lot lighter than our old gas mower and I think about 1/2 as loud.
And since the battery comes precharged (not all models do this I read), I tried it out as soon as we got it out of the box. I tell you the convenience factor for battery mowers isn't hard to figure out as soon as you actually try one.

And about mulching for those of you who prefer this:
I read a lot online about how well different brand battery mowers do or don't bag, but I mulch because we think it's better for the lawn plus we really don't have anywhere to dump grass clippings. This mower mulches fantastic, not a sign of grass clippings anywhere, which is how I want it.I am impressed! It has a quite deep deck which I thinks helps a lot with the mulching more than our old gas mower. All in all, I really like this mower a lot.

Summary: If you have a very small yard (Perhaps 1000-1500 square feet of lawn) this could be a decent compromise for you, otherwise I don't think the 14" path and limited battery capacity will "cut it"

My neighbor has this one from a couple of years ago and I tried it out. It's smaller, lighter and quieter than the two cordless mowers we've used but that 14" path would probably be a dealbreaker for most people. When you consider that you will overlap each pass by at least 2-3 inches, you're really only cutting 10-11 inches on each pass.
+ Easy to maneuver
+ Quiet
+ Small
+ Super light compared to our B&D CM1100 or Toro, both of which weigh about twice as much

- 14" path!?!?!
- Pricey for what you get
- Hard to cut near obstacles
I've put a quick guide of the most popular models on Amazon. All info reported by manufacturer. Amazon won't let me put prices in my review, sorry!

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. No fumes or exhaust- because gas mowers don't have catalytic converters, they can pollute as much in a year as 43 cars!!!!.They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is basically NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a cheaper but having a cord is a pain.

>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.

>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.

>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.

>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18"Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)

>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.

>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so it's cooler and the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted ~7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you might be able to kill the batteries in a year or two.

>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.

>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.

If you've found this review helpful or have questions/comments, please let me know!

I just wanted to say that this battery does come with an extra charger. It was kinda hidden in the box, I would not have noticed it if I didn't break down the box for recycling. It was tucked under a flap in the bottom of the box.
The description didn't say it came with a charger so I was happy to have found it. Now I can charge both batteries at the same time.

Epic EP21H 21-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Review

Epic EP21H 21 inch 24-Volt Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this for about two weeks but just had a chance to use it today. I was very impressed at how quiet it was. Even my wife made a comment about how nice it was not hearing the noise of our gas mower wile she worked in the office. I wasn't sure what to expect as we have a large corner lot and several clumps of thick crabgrass spread throughout the yard. I didn't take it easy on the mower. I used the same cutting height as my gas mower and I left in the mulch plug just so I could compare them side by side. There really wasn't much difference between my 6.5hp 21 inch Yard Man and my new Epic Electric. As I ran them side-by-side they both choked in the same places on thick grass (about 8 inches high) on the first mowing of the season. I did notice that the Epic left some tall grass standing after the cut but I'm guessing that will even out after the grass fills in. It did not leave any clumps of cut grass and even did a better job of mulching than my gas mower. I think it is a winner.

Pros:
First one in my neighborhood.
60% less noise than a gas mower.
Instant on.
Self-Propel works well. Took me along at a nice clip.
Comfortable handle and controls.
Steel deck. Looks like it should last a long time.
Yard looks nice. I was impressed how well it mulches.

Cons:
Manual is a joke. The one for the charger is in broken English. Luckily it is easy to assemble and run.
There is a key in the battery area but no clear directions how to remove it.You have to rock it either forward or backwards with a pretty good push to get it to snap out. I was afraid the first time I did it that I would break it but it is strong plastic.
There is a black adapter you have to put on the batteries (facing each other) if you want to charge the batteries out of the mower. Put them in position first as they are heavy and hard to move after they are connected.
When you engage the Self-Propel it kind of pulls you quickly for a second and then it slows to a normal pace. Took me a couple of times to get the hang of it.

It's good to go GREEN!

With the Epic it's simple: just push and go. This cutting-edge mower requires no engine maintenance and absolutely no gas, oil, or cords. So when you decide it's time to mow, you can get right to work without wasting valuable time on upkeep. The hassle-free design also means you can store the mower (even upside down or hanging on the wall) without worrying about spills.

Plus, the quiet motor helps make lawn maintenance more relaxing while reducing noise pollution in your neighborhood.
High-Performance Motor Cuts Long or Wet Grass
The superb Terra Phase High-Performance Motor has a brushless, electric construction, which increases the mower's run-times for maximum efficiency and gives the mower the torque to cut through long, thick, or wet grass. Using this state of the art technology and a durable solid steel deck keeps the Epic performing and looking like new for the long term.
Powerful Batteries Let You Tackle Your Lawn in One Charge
An average lot (7,000 to 10,000 square feet) can be cut in just one charge of the Epic's highly efficient batteries. The included batteries only take 12 hours to charge, or they can be charged in four to five hours with the Rapid Charger Station sold separately. Charging can be done on board the mower with the built-in charging plug, or you can remove the batteries and recharge them using the included off-board charging cradle. Also, a built-in LED battery level indicator on the mower keeps you in-the-know about your battery power levels.

Black and Decker 24.0 Volt Lawn Mower Battery 90508011 Review

I've had the cmm1200 for 3 years, replaced the battery last year, and this year it's again hardly holding a charge. It worked great when battery was new last summer, but over winter it seems to have lost the ability to hold a charge - even though I kept it plugged in the entire time as per the Black and Decker mower manual. I wouldn't give up my rechargeable electric mower even with the inconvenience of the battery's giving out only a quarter of the way through our yard now (it used to go the whole yard) - we love the mower does a fantastic job otherwise - but it is becoming a real inconvenience. B&W needs to give better options / instructions for making the battery capacity last longer than a couple dozen recharge cycles.

Remington RM212B 19-Inch 24 Volt Cordless Electric Side Discharge/Mulching/Bagging Lawn Mower With Single Level Height Adjust & Removable Battery Review

I purchased an earlier version of this mower a few years ago which had a 60 volt, removable, battery. The first mower that arrived had a defective selector switch, as did its replacement. The second replacement (third mower) was sent from the manufacturer (who dunned me return shipping for the two defective mowers), and it worked quite well...until a few months later when mowing next to the curb I lifted the front of the mower to turn it around and the front wheels came off and took off down the street. After having the wheels reattached (according to the repair shop, a crucial part had been left off the wheel assembly by the manufacturer), the mower functioned wonderfully...until the battery died last fall and I tried to buy a replacement and couldn't.Apparently, the manufacturer had discontinued the mower and no longer sold replacement batteries or parts.I tried to give the mower to the repair shop who had fixed the wheels-off problem, thinking they might be able to cannibalize it for parts, but they laughed. And laughed. And said "no thank you," and laughed some more.Although I was able to dispose of the dead battery at a battery "recycle" center, the mower itself resides at my city's landfill (so much for going Green). If you're thinking of going Remington, don't.

I have not used this mower, but after 12 years with the B&D CMM1000 and a few weeks with the Toro, I thought I'd add some info to help buyers.

Our CMM1000 struggled in tall or wet grass, but most of the time was adequate on power. It had 24V with a 19" blade. Our 36V / 20" Toro has so far cut everything we've thrown at it, but lacks some of the nicer features the Neuton or newer B&D have.

Neuton was one of the first on the market with a cordless mower so I would trust them more than many of the other new entrants. That said, they are certainly pricey.

I ordered what I assumed was a battery pack for my battery powered cordless lawn mower.Based on the image shown, I expected this to be supplied in the battery enclosure.Instead, I received two large batteries which I had to insert in the existing battery enclosure of the lawnmower. This was not particularly difficult however. The price was approx $99 for batteries that can be obtained locally for about 30-50% of that cost. Before buying, I would suggest you open your battery enclosure and take one the two batteries to a local commercial battery store where you will save a lot of money.

I rated this mower at five stars because it delivered all that it promised.I also went directly through the Company (sorry, Amazon) because my comfort-zone with the price suggested to me that I should by-pass the middleman. From day-one, the company courteously answered all my pre-purchase questions, walked me through shipping - assembly- and operations, including tips to use the mower more effectively.

Using my push mower, my suburban lawn used to take me almost three hours to do, and that with my wife's help.(I'm retired, i.e., well over 21.) Now I do it by myself in about one hour. After about eight mowings already, I am quite satisfied.Operationally, the twin blades cut well, and the bagger is superb. The power is more than adequate, both in chomping grass and rises in terrain with rider and full load of grass.I also tested the charging capacity.I did a couple of double-runs on one recharge, for a total of about two and three-quarters of an hour.It can do the promised three hour running time per charge.

It was refreshing, considering the cost of the machine, to have so many safeguards to protect the mower itself, as well as the obvious safety to operator and other wee critters nearby. For me, it is more agile that a conventional tractor-type.I appreciate not having bio-hazards in the garage, no odors, and almost nothing in maintenance. With an estimated 25-30 recharges per mowing season,I would anticipate a long, long time before needing to replace the battery pack.

If you have a normal suburban-sized lawn, and a noisy conventional gas riding mower does not excite you, I could recommend the Recharge Electric riding mower without reservation.
