Toro 51599 Ultra 12 amp Variable-Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum with Metal Impeller Review

Toro 51599 Ultra 12 amp Variable-Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum with Metal Impeller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this Toro electric blow and vac in utter frustration after spending a small fortune on similar gasoline powered products. I use it as a vac several times per week and even daily in the Fall. I found that the very cheap gasoline blow and vacs start falling apart very quickly indeed as the result ofpoor and shoddy design so I moved up to the top of the line, Echo, which appears to be very well made and engineered. My first one, an ES211, did outlast its 2 year warranty, it had a starter assembly and cord replaced under warranty but then just wore out during the third year. The second ES211 lasted 18 months until something broke inside the engine and it wouldn't even rotate. The third one (a $290+tax ES231 heavy duty model) is just over a year old and overheats very quickly, smokes badly, and is melting the plastic grill surrounding the engine.
The dealers lie and tell me that it's my fault and that the problem is lack of lubrication. As a lifelong, now retired, professional mechanical engineer and having owned 2-stroke engines since a teenager I have always used the correct gas/oil mixture in 2-stroke engines including motorcycles of course.
The Toro Ultra Blower and Vac does everything I need. Let's list the advantages. It is amazingly light and doesn't strain your back lugging its bulk plus a heavy bag of leaves around the way a gas powered model does - this is very important and not to be dismissed as you get up in years. It always starts when you turn the knob - you sure can't say that about gasoline powered garden equipment. It converts from a blower to a vac very quickly without needing a screwdriver and undue force - Toro obviously corrected this problem from the prior model. It is very quiet compared with gas models - your neighbors will appreciate this. It doesn't have a spark plug or an air filter that needs frequent attention. It doesn't get dirty, grimy, and oily from gasoline exhaust and leaky carburetors and tubing. You don't have to buy expensive gasoline and oil and be required to mix and find a place to store a separate highly inflammable gas/oil mixture. The Toro has a cast magnesium impeller that handles the occasional twig or stone quite handily. The leaf bag is well designed, it disconnects easily and is a snap to empty. The vac suction and air blast from the blower seems equivalent to the Echo. Last but not least is P R I C E , my Toro was $69.99, at that price I could buy four of them for the price of one Echo ES231.
Now for the only disadvantage I can think of. I use a 100 ft. 13amp. electric cord and reel. You sacrifice some ease of mobility because you have a cord dragging behind you all of the time - nothing in life is perfect I guess.

Product Description:
Powerful and effective, the Toro Ultra 3-in-1 Blower, Vacuum, and Leaf Shredder makes completing yard work fun and easy. With air speeds up to 235 mph, this electric blower nevertheless is lighter, quieter, and cleaner than similar gas blowers. And with a sleek, ergonomical design, it's a tool that is easy to use and will grab your neighbors' attention.
The Toro Ultra 3-in-1 Blower, Vacuum, and Leaf Shredder:

Is electric so it is lighter, quieter, and cleaner than similar gas blower.
    Has a variable speed motor.
Features a metal impeller for mulching debris.

Convert from blower to vacuum without tools.

The metal impeller shreds leaves into a mulch.

The impeller can reduce up to 16 bags' worth of waste to one bag. Match the Power to the Task for Better Results
Tackle big clean-up jobs the right way with this powerful blower vac. A variable speed 12 Amp motor lets you select from an infinite variety of speeds between 112 mph and 235 mph. This means that you can use low speeds to clear off hard surfaces and clean up tight areas without making a mess and without sacrificing the blower's high-speed functionality.
Air Speed and Air Volume to Get Yard Jobs Done
Unlike some manufacturers, who simply reduce the size of their blower nozzles to achieve higher air speed ratings without increasing the practical value of their tools, Toro gives this blower vac the ability to balance between air speed (measured in mph) and air volume (measured in cfm) to ensure maximum power and performance. This Ultra blower vac offers air speeds up to 235 mph and air volume up to 255 cfm, allowing you to move a substantial volume of leaves and debris with ease.
3-in-1 Versatility Makes Managing Tasks Easy
A convenient quick-release latch lets you convert your blower into a vacuum in seconds without any tools, while a metal impeller makes it easy to mulch debris.
The magnesium serrated metal blades on the impeller shred leaves and other unwanted debris into a fine mulch that you can use around your lawn and garden, saving money and recycling important nutrients. It also makes it easy to dispose of unwanted yard waste, since the impeller can reduce 16 bags' worth of leaves to one bag.
Clean and Efficient with Electric Power
Compared with gas blowers, electric blowers are quieter, more eco-friendly, and require less maintenance. They start up instantly without requiring you to master a finicky pull cord. There's no messy gas-oil mixture to worry about, and you don't have to contend with noxious fumes to get a job done.
This high-powered blower also weighs in at a very manageable 7.5 pounds, making it easy on your back.
This blower/vac is backed by a full two-year warranty.
What's in the Box
Power unit, blower tubes, vac tubes, vac bag, and operators manual.

Even a large yard is easy to clean up with this blower.

The mower came all assembled (except for needing oil added) and started right off.I've never had a self propelled mower before, so it took some getting use to having to walk at the mower's speed (I seem to want to walk faster). But, it mows the grass very nicely. So far, all I've done is mulch, but it does it very well. And, I don't end up tired when I'm done mowing like I did on my "push" mower.I think this is going to work out very well for me.

Have had this mower model for three years and it has never failed to start.Mow about 5,000 sqft once a week in season.HOWEVER, the rear wheels are made of cheap, cheap, cheap and flimsy plastic and have broken one per year and the cost is now ~$35 incl. shipping. So, factor in another $100 to your cost of ownership over 3 or 4 years.

Average Reviews:

If not, like those of us who have full-time jobs, and you'd actually like to take more than 1 inch off of your lawn each time you mow, you should buy a different mower.
I have owned this mower for only a month and it does indeed cut the lawn, but it does not recycle, nor does it bag.

The "recycler" simply slaps gobs of finely ground/pureed grass onto the walls of the deck until the blade becomes off-balance and begins to grind excessively until the engine starts bogging down.Of course this is terrible for the longevity of engine life.I have had to kill the mower after only 2-3 rows, 25ft long, to let the majority of the mulched/pureed grass drop out of the deck. Then begin again.

The "bagger" does basically the same thing, once the grass is mush, the mower tries to shoot it into the bag through a tiny hole which then gets clogged due to the extreme amounts of moisture and lack of space to actually push the grass to the back of the bag. Yes, I waited for a week of dry, hot summer sun, and still the same result.Plants retain moisture.

I am no nubie to mowing lawns either, I worked for a lawn care company for several years, we used Toro products, I like them, correction, I LIKED them (in regards to this product anyway). But I was let-down after purchasing this model.I am also a motorcycle mechanic so I know what is bad for engines.

If this mower had a side discharge it MAY have been a decent product, but who knows. The manual even claims to have a rear discharge chute/deflector, however the dealer had no clue about it and couldn't even find it in their database.

I'll let you know if that changes anything if they ever find it for me to test out.

Toro Recycler Self-Propelled Mower Briggs & Stratton 7.0 TP #20332
Average Reviews:

The quality of cut is below what I've come to expect from my commercial mower - but hey, this only cost 1/25th of what it did. After a month of owning it and running it near 60 hours, it seems reliable.Starts 75% of the time on the first pull and always by the second. The drive belt chatters some if the grass is juicy and collects on the belt.It does a near flawless job in Tall Fescue, but leaves stragglers and obvious wheel tracks in Kentucky Blue Grass. The bagging system seems to work well.I mainly use it in mulching mode - or, if the grass is tall, discharge mode.It cuts best with the front of the deck set to your intended cutting height and the rear set higher by one notch. And, speaking of tall grass, it does a pretty good job cutting tall grass (6-8") at the highest wheel setting (4" on this mower) compared to other 22" mowers I've had.I tried switching the blade to the Gator #96-607 blade, which doesn't really improve the quality of cut, but it does seem to last longer before it needs sharpening. The Gator also seems to have a slight advantage in clipping dispersal when in discharge mode. The cleaning port does ok to rinse out the bulk of what collects under the deck - but if you wait long after you finish cutting and the grass dries under the deck, all bets are off.Taller clippings collect around the blade shroud and must be removed manually from time to time.Granted, I'm picky - and to get a better cutting 22" mower will likely cost twice as much. All in all, not too bad.

My Toro is over 6 yrs. old. I've had the original blade sharpened 2 yrs. ago but thought I would opt for a new one. Thus, I ordered this one that looked IDENTICAL to the the factory blade. When I rec'd it, it did NOT look like the picture (the one I rec'd was solid at the ends, unlike the picture and my original blade).I did not want to go to the hassle of returning it as it was only $25 (free shipping) so I removed the old blade and attached this one.It was definitely sharp and I could see the grass blades mulched to practically dust! Thus, I would recommend but picture is deceiving vs. what you receive.

I purchased an earlier version of this mower a few years ago which had a 60 volt, removable, battery. The first mower that arrived had a defective selector switch, as did its replacement. The second replacement (third mower) was sent from the manufacturer (who dunned me return shipping for the two defective mowers), and it worked quite well...until a few months later when mowing next to the curb I lifted the front of the mower to turn it around and the front wheels came off and took off down the street. After having the wheels reattached (according to the repair shop, a crucial part had been left off the wheel assembly by the manufacturer), the mower functioned wonderfully...until the battery died last fall and I tried to buy a replacement and couldn't.Apparently, the manufacturer had discontinued the mower and no longer sold replacement batteries or parts.I tried to give the mower to the repair shop who had fixed the wheels-off problem, thinking they might be able to cannibalize it for parts, but they laughed. And laughed. And said "no thank you," and laughed some more.Although I was able to dispose of the dead battery at a battery "recycle" center, the mower itself resides at my city's landfill (so much for going Green). If you're thinking of going Remington, don't.

Toro Recycler (22") 190cc Personal Pace Lawn Mower w/ Blade Override - 20333 Review

Toro Recycler 190cc Personal Pace Lawn Mower w/ Blade Override - 20333
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my first self-propelled mower. I'm coming from a basic, no-frills machine that I bought some years ago when I just wanted something cheap that would do the job.

I bought this mower at the local Depot, cheaper than the advertised price here even after tax was added. I brought it home and unpacked it.Setup was done in just a couple of minutes -- unlike my previous mower, this one is almost entirely assembled in the box. All you need to do is put the handle on and attach the blade clutch lever to it.No tools required.

Next, add the fluids. The mower comes with the right amount of 30-weight oil. Then fill up the gas tank, and you're off.

The mower has an engine kill switch like you'd find on a motorcycle. Switch to "I" (Ignition). Pull the starter cord.Mine fired up on the first pull! The engine runs smoothly (and much quieter than my old mower). You don't need to have the safety bar pulled in at this point -- the engine will run, but the blades will not spin.

Pull the safety bar in and the blades start spinning. Release it and they stop, but the engine keeps running. Kill the engine by flipping the ignition switch to OFF.

That's cool. With my old mower, every time I let go of the safety bar it killed the engine and I would have to pull the starter cord again to get it going.

The propulsion is really nice. The upper section of the grip is spring-loaded and slides up and down the vertical handlebar rods slightly. The more pressure you apply to the handlebar, the faster the mower will want to move.Release the bar, and the mower stops moving. There is another, secondary handlebar underneath that can be used to circumvent the propulsion entirely, if desired.

There is also a large lever that allows you to change between mulching and bagging. This can be done at any time. With the bag attached, pulling the lever to the rear will start bagging, while pushing the lever forwardwill close off the opening to the bag and start mulching instead. The mower also comes with the side discharge attachment, which installs easily and is very effective.

When you're done mowing, there is a port on the side that accepts a standard garden hose. Attach a hose to the mower and turn it on.Then start the mower and start the blades spinning. It does a really good job of cleaning out the mower for you. When the water coming out starts to run clear, just shut off the hose and let the blades keep spinning for another few seconds until the mower is dry.You will still need to clean out some of it, though, like the bag port, which the hose doesn't reach.

The Briggs & Stratton engine seems strong, easily handling whatever horrible things I threw at it (with a caveat, explained below). Propulsion was also strong, and even going up a steep incline behind my house required only about 5% of the effort required with my previous mower. The overall build quality is excellent, and it's a real looker to boot.

There are a couple of minor quibbles, but nothing significant enough to merit the loss of a star. I'm not a huge fan of the white wheels, which were already turning green after the first mow. And the wheels themselves don't turn as freely as those on my old mower. Presumably this is because of the propulsion mechanism, so I guess that could be the case with any self-propelled mower. And finally, when in mulching mode, the mower seems to stall more frequently than my old mower when it hits the hard stuff. I live in Florida, and it rains a lot in the summer.Sun + lots of water = grass that's sometimes a foot high in a week. So if the grass gets too long in between mows, this mower will sometimes stall because there's way too much material to mash around. However, switching to side discharge or bagging solves the problem immediately, and the mower will cut ANYTHING.

Company's web site said it would fit my model mower but it did not. I had to fab up my own solution to make it fit. However, it's a good idea and now that I have it installed it works well. It is well constructed. However, if you are not adept at mechanical work and you do not see your exact model of mower on the companies web site I would not recommend that you make this purchase. I my case I had to add a separate metal plate to both sides, drill holes to mount it to the mower as well as holes for the kit in order to make the kit fit my Toro.

Toro 20360 e-Cycler 20-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

Toro 20360 e-Cycler 20 inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In a crowded field the Toro compares well based on it's performance - it cuts and mulches *very* well.Where it falls short is on features and to a lesser extent, construction. If I had to do it again, I'd take a closer look at the B&D CM1936. Both of these mowers were the top picks in the March 2010 Consumer Reports. I would rate this as 4+ stars overall but ding them half a star for customer service.

I've had this machine for two months now and was able to test it back to back with our B&D CMM1000 24V 19" cordless mower. To make things fair I sharpened the B&D and cleaned the deck. The Toro was substantially quieter and easier to maneuver (It's lighter and the weight is biased towards the rear wheels. After 12 years the B&D is still an impressive machine but in tall or wet grass it simply couldn't keep up. I had to re-mow with the B&D while the Toro gave a good cut with a single pass - even when walking quickly! You could hear the motor slow down but it still gave an excellent cut and mulched effectively.

The improved performance isn't surprising given the extra voltage.I'd note that when we bought the Black & Decker CMM1000 ~11 years ago, the only other cordless mower was the Neuton 14" via mail order. Now there are more than you can shake a stick at (SEE CHART)

Fit and finish is good but some items do not inspire confidence. The plastic motor cover is flimsy though it's hard to judge as two of the plastic bosses were broken (more on that later) Where the charger plugs in wobbles a lot and the locknut holding the circuit breaker in place was half off with no Loctite applied. This would have been lost within the first hour of use. Finally, the first time I tried to attach the grass catcher I had to wrestle with a wire which interfered with the grass door.

The handle folds but it's the same others - you have a large plastic wingnut you have to turn...and turn...and turn...Hasn't anyone come up with a better quick release for this?

The metal deck makes a big difference - it's deeper and mulches more efficiently, and makes for a smaller overall mower - despite this, our old B&D CMM1000 feels slightly more solid. Also, The B&D had a proper "Mulch Plug" while the Toro mulch cover allows grass to collect in a hollow area behind the mulch door - despite this, I never noticed the grass clumping. The one annoyance is that you have to tilt the mower to dump this out or you are going to be dragging it into your garage.

Also the Toro's metal deck allows the blade to get much closer to fences and trees. With the B&D, the 2 layer plastic deck was much thicker so the blade was at least 3" away. This is more like 1" It's the wheel placement. If you lay a straight edge across the outside of the wheels, there's 1/2" to the Toro blade but 1-1/2 inches on the Black and Decker.Unfortunately the Toro seems to waste this advantage on one side as the handle sticks out so that it rubs if you mow with a fence on your right.

Toro says "Lighter than most other cordless mowers" but I'm not so sure (SEE CHART)

I have mixed feelings about the on/off switch.I preferred the dead mans bar on the B&D rather than this lever, which forces you to keep your right hand on the handle at all times. On the other hand, you can power off when crossing a sidewalk or driveway just by relaxing your grip.

Overall, this mower performs well but doesn't of the other features / details right. For the price, I think the B&DCM1936 offers a lot more, but if flat out mowing performance is your criteria, this is the one for you.

I might be biased towards B&D given our 10+ trouble free years with their CMM1000, but you could say that I might also have a favorable bias towards the Toro since I received it through Amazon Vine.

I received this item with some minor damage. There are 4 screws which hold the top plastic cover on.Two of the screw bosses were broken. When I removed the cover, I saw that the two zip ties holding the batteries down were also broken. Finally, one of the rear wheel adjusters was bent.I called Toro up and after a Looooong time on hold they told me to either pay to have it repaired myself or to go through Amazon and return it.Not really worth the hassle and rather frustrating.

+ 36 volts gives LOTS of power - mulches effortlessly
+ 20 inch cutting path (really 19-5/8", but our 19" B&D was only 18-1/2)
+ Tall metal deck gives more complete mulching
+ Wheel placement BIG plus for cutting next to fences, trees
- Toro Customer Service
- Does not store vertically like the B&D
- Wheels adjust individually
- No dead man bar
- Grass catcher very small (perhaps 1/2 the volume of the B&D)
- Charger plug wobbles
- Bar not as ergonomic, also rubs against fence when mowing alongside.

I've put a quick guide of the most popular models on Amazon. All info reported by manufacturer.Amazon won't let me put prices in my review, sorry!

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is almost NO maintenance. (We spent [...] over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a lot cheaper but then you have a cord. Also, certain models like the B&D can be stored vertically since there is no oil or gas to leak out

>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower?Up front cost (Typically [...] more)Also, They weigh significantly more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it.They don't have as much power as gas (even the 36V ones) and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.

>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature for when you let your grass get too long.

>>What is a watt-hour?It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.

>>Is the cutting path a big deal?It can be - 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered.Second, when you consider a ~3" overlap on each pass, a 20" blade effectively cuts 13% more than an 18" (especially since manufacturers generally inflate their blade lengths by about 1/2")If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18"

>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, you can swap out for more run time (Note that a second battery typically costs [...]).Also, You WILL need to replace the batteries eventually, and a this makes it easier (Note that I replaced the CMM1000 batteries by myself, about a 20 minute job requiring only a screwdriver and pliers)Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.

>>Why should I care about higher voltage?Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster.Withthe same chemistry and current,a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.

>>Metal deck or plastic?Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue.Plastic does get scratched up, and since it isn't as strong, it makes for a larger mower.
