(More customer reviews)I have owned this mower for over a year now. I have two large lawns including an area for my dog run which gets high sometimes because I don't mow every week. The major reason I considered buying an electric mower was that the gas rotary mowers I have owned always were hard to start after the Winter season. I saw an ad for the Neuton and a cordless electric seemed attractive. No cord to run over or move around.

RATING DETAILS
Here is where the Neuton earned points:

1) Its starts every time.
2) Its environmentally friendly. No exhaust and no noise.
3) Its lighter than my old steel gas mower (slightly).
4) No leaking fluids when you want to turn it over to clean or maintain the blade.
5) Not that I don't own and like many foreign produced items, but this is made in America (Vermont). It feels good to me to support our domestic market!

Here is where the Neuton lost a few points:

1) After the first year the battery seems to be losing some of its charging capacity. Where I used to get an hour and a half's life on a full charge, now I get maybe an hour. Note this is a lead/acid battery and not a more high tech variety.
2) The trimmer attachment works, but its not really that maneuverable. Keep your corded electric string trimmer and pass on the too expensive trimmer attachment.
3) It takes me two days to mow all my grass. Seriously consider buying the extra battery if you have a lot of lawn to cut.
4) If you expect this mower to be as robust as your gas rotary model, you will probably be disappointed. But since the gas mowers where I live no longer come with a variable throttle, you don't really lose that much power. I see Neuton has a newer, more powerful version now. I would probably have purchased that one if it were available at the time.

(More customer reviews)I was very happy with this mower. My only complaint was the rear flexiable guard is too long and when you are pulling the mower backwards it get into the blade. I just cut off about 3 inches of the guard which is just a soft plastic and it works great. The mower has plenty of power and it is quiet. It mulches high grass OK and does normal length grass fine. All in all a fine mower.

When my gas mower died a few weeks ago I started looking into electric mowers as a compliment to my battery operated BD, weedeater,blower,hedge clippers. I was hesitant as an electric mower for a 12,000 lot is a big step, giving up on ease of movement and power and selfpropelled feature or so i thought.

Well i ordered off of Amazon and it came within 72 hours, free shipping WOW and the price was terrific compared to local stores and no tax...

Anyway, i put it together and it was ready to use within 10 minutes, really!!!

You do need an electrical cord to operate and i had 100' cord which is perfect for my yard. My yard has not been mowed in several weeks as my gas mower died and i did not want to spend the money for reserection of a 4 year old mower plus gas prices are crazy right now. I did plan my route since i would have a cord i was pulling. Turned it on and it was amazing on how much less noise it was compared to my gas mower. My wife came out and asked when i was going to start but had been mowing for 15 minutes, lol.

I started in the mulching mode at first and not paying attention had it on the lowest setting....it was going fine but when i hit thicker deeper grass it did bogg down. I inserted the discharge shute and even on the lowest setting in taller grass it mowed fine. Once i realized i had it on the lowest setting and moved it up in height comparable to my gas mower the electric mower never bogged down one time even when mulching!!!The cord is not bad at all although i did have to get used to it as i wrapped it around the tree once and just laughed at myself. I thought i would miss the self propelled feature, however, this mower is sooo light its like pushing a vacum cleaner so i was managing the cord with my left, pushing with my right and no problems, mowed like a champ, no uneven cuts. My neighbors came out and were admiring the mower all commented on how nice and sleeked it looked for a mower and how quiet it was.

I would recommend this mower to anyone wanting to go electric as the cord is not that big a deal like i thought i would be when reading the reviews. So far so good B&D has a home run with this mower.

(More customer reviews)I initially considered the "SP" version of this mower @ Home Depot...the only model they sell.If you have serious elevation changes in your yard, perhaps the self-propelled version is worthwhile [whether the front-wheel drive Solaris or its rear-wheel drive Epic & Utopia cousins].Otherwise, buy this model.You can't get this info from the Linamar website, but the self-propelled versions are 18# heavier; when you're trying to make a battery charge last, draining them via an extra drive belt to pull/push a [heavier] mower makes little sense.

This mower is solidly built, & the big wheels make it easy to push & quite maneuverable.I gave it a test run, then handed it off to the 16-year old who cuts my grass.No issues.I was particularly pleased to see how well it mulched, as I'm a big believer in leaving clippings to nourish the lawn.There was no clumping, & as long as we don't cut wet grass, I expect it to stay that way.

Other cordless mowers probably perform as well, though most have decks smaller than this one's 21" which means longer mowing time.I think the Solaris' brushless motor is a huge advantage, & expect great longevity.Ultimately, though, I rejected most other mowers because replacing their batteries was cumbersome or impossible; I think that's nuts.The Solaris batteries swap out in seconds.Mine lasted about as long as expected, covering 80% of my .4 acres.With the money I saved by skipping the self-propelled feature [& headaches], I bought a 2nd set of batteries & have power to spare.It's a great solution, & my neighbors--including one who just bought an $800 Honda to get a pushbutton start like mine--are jealous.

The cons are minor.Changing deck height requires moving 4 levers instead of 1...but I only do this a couple of times a season.The tone it emits on stopping is irritating [hold the bail down or pull the key to silence].Charger mechanical connections could be tighter.Overall, though, well-designed & well-built.

(More customer reviews)I was so excited to get my new Lawnatron battery mower this week. My husband and I thought we'd get another season out of a 10 year old John Deere gas mower, but it didn't make it.We have a little less than 1/2 an acre to mow and wanted to try a battery operated one because of all the no oil- gas convenience. (I do most of the mowing because my husband travels a lot).I did a lot of research online and we also went to Lowes and Home Depot and looked at what they have. We looked at a lot of mowers and the Lawnatron was the only battery model we saw that looked like a ordinary lawn mower, with some tweaks to use the battery instead of a gas engine.

Ordering online from Amazon was straight forward as always, and when I called Green Yard Keeper (the company that sells Lawnatrons) to make some special shipping arrangements, they picked up immediately and the woman I spoke with was friendly and very helpful - a good sign in my opinion.

First some comments about the mower:
For one thing it has a well built steel mower deck which I like because I do bang the mower into things sometimes and I read online that the plastic ones can crack occasionally. It has a safety lock key (we have small kids) but I like that it's up on the handle so you don't have to reach down to use it. After the key is in, just pull up the handle and it's on - it just doesn't get any easier than that which is definitely what I was looking for!It is a lot lighter than our old gas mower and I think about 1/2 as loud.
And since the battery comes precharged (not all models do this I read), I tried it out as soon as we got it out of the box. I tell you the convenience factor for battery mowers isn't hard to figure out as soon as you actually try one.

And about mulching for those of you who prefer this:
I read a lot online about how well different brand battery mowers do or don't bag, but I mulch because we think it's better for the lawn plus we really don't have anywhere to dump grass clippings. This mower mulches fantastic, not a sign of grass clippings anywhere, which is how I want it.I am impressed! It has a quite deep deck which I thinks helps a lot with the mulching more than our old gas mower. All in all, I really like this mower a lot.

(More customer reviews)We have had a Neuton 5.1 mower for some time. We love it. Once you go electric you can never go back. No gas, no fumes, no yanking, no tune-ups, no oil, mowing heaven. I personally think you'd have to be nuts to even consider going gas if you needed a new mower. I haven't even mentioned that gas mowers are INCREDIBLE polluters. Taking into account the pollution used to create the electricty for Neutons, Neutons still pollute a small fraction of what gas mowers do. Anyhow if you are here you probably have a Neuton but in case you were considering one, I say great move to get a Neuton or at least an electric mower.

But one of the nicest things about the Neuton is this attachment. I have always had problems with hand held edgers and trimmers to get the things to work and to advance cord, even with auto advance. The Neuton attachment advances the cord automatically and flawlessly. The replacement cartridges are easy to install and last a long time. It is super easy to use. Just stick in front and flip the power switch to aux and away you go.

It is very powerful as an edger and does a great, clean job. It also is very powerful as a trimmer. The only thing to keep in mind is that it does have limitations as a trimmer. It will go up and down when you raise and lower the Neuton but obviously does not have the range of heights a handheld trimmer would. So for trimming high hedges this will not work. But for trimming around trees, and flower beds, and our herb and vegetable gardens this works great.

Highly recommended as is the Neuton. And, again, if you take care of your own lawn, sell on Ebay or give away your gas mower now and get an electric. I would highly recommend cordless. Almost anyone who I have ever talked to that had one bad thing to say about an electric mower was because it was corded and a hassle. Electric mowers are the best thing to happen to lawn care since...well since people started having lawns.

I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to push (even my 2 year old son "helped" and pushed it by himself) and stays really sharp. Cutting was excellent and it is neat to see the clippings fly. (More customer reviews)I purchased an earlier version of this mower a few years ago which had a 60 volt, removable, battery.The first mower that arrived had a defective selector switch, as did its replacement.The second replacement (third mower) was sent from the manufacturer (who dunned me return shipping for the two defective mowers), and it worked quite well...until a few months later when mowing next to the curb I lifted the front of the mower to turn it around and the front wheels came off and took off down the street.After having the wheels reattached (according to the repair shop, a crucial part had been left off the wheel assembly by the manufacturer), the mower functioned wonderfully...until the battery died last fall and I tried to buy a replacement and couldn't.Apparently, the manufacturer had discontinued the mower and no longer sold replacement batteries or parts.I tried to give the mower to the repair shop who had fixed the wheels-off problem, thinking they might be able to cannibalize it for parts, but they laughed.And laughed.And said "no thank you," and laughed some more.Although I was able to dispose of the dead battery at a battery "recycle" center, the mower itself resides at my city's landfill (so much for going Green).If you're thinking of going Remington, don't.

(More customer reviews)I have not used this mower, but after 12 years with the B&D CMM1000 and a few weeks with the Toro, I thought I'd add some info to help buyers.

Our CMM1000 struggled in tall or wet grass, but most of the time was adequate on power.It had 24V with a 19" blade. Our 36V / 20" Toro has so far cut everything we've thrown at it, but lacks some of the nicer features the Neuton or newer B&D have.

Neuton was one of the first on the market with a cordless mower so I would trust them more than many of the other new entrants.That said, they are certainly pricey.

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. No fumes or exhaust- because gas mowers don't have catalytic converters, they can pollute as much in a year as 43 cars!!!!.They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is basically NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a cheaper but having a cord is a pain.

>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.

>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.

>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.

>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18"Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)

>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.

>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so it's cooler and the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted ~7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you might be able to kill the batteries in a year or two.

>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.

>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.

(More customer reviews)I ordered what I assumed was a battery pack for my battery powered cordless lawn mower.Based on the image shown, I expected this to be supplied in the battery enclosure.Instead, I received two large batteries which I had to insert in the existing battery enclosure of the lawnmower.This was not particularly difficult however.The price was approx $99 for batteries that can be obtained locally for about 30-50% of that cost.Before buying, I would suggest you open your battery enclosure and take one the two batteries to a local commercial battery store where you will save a lot of money.

I was all ready to purchase a corded model when I came across the Earthwise 20" 24 volt cordless rechargeable. I must admit that I was very apprehensive about cordless, I've owned many gutless cordless power tools.During my research of the Earthwise I ran across a video that showed the lawnmower in action - I was sold.I purchased immediately and have been extremely pleased.

This mower has all the power that I could ever need to take care of my yard (approx. 1/4 acre of grass, with some on a slope).The battery came fully charged and I had the mower out of the box, fully assembled (very easy), and out mowing withing 20 minutes.Used the grass catcher just to see how it worked (did a great job), then took it off and have mulched ever since (this machine turns your grass into the minutest particles).

It is very well constructed (the deck is metal - this is good), the height adjustment could not be easier (one lever adjusts all wheels - again, very good), it pushes very easily (thanks to the ball-bearing wheels), and the handle folds to make for very compact storage.

My yard and I am happy again!

(More customer reviews)I've had this mower since the previous Spring, and every time I'm out mowing, I'm thinking about the review that I planned to write here about it.So needless to say, I've thought a lot about this.Here are 6 reasons to get this lawnmower:

1. It's cheap, about half the price that an equivalent gas mower would set you back.It's probably also a little bit cheaper to keep running, too.

2. It's light.A lot of gas mowers are self-propelled because they're so heavy to push around, but at 36 pounds, this mower doesn't need to be self-propelled.You can move it back and forth with relative ease, much like a heavy vacuum cleaner.

3. It's easy to start.No yanking the cord to get it going; just turn it on and start.Of course, you can get self-starting gas mowers these days as well, but they will set you back even more money.

4. It's quiet.Well, okay, it's not THAT quiet.But it's quieter than most.

5. It doesn't smell.The lawn doesn't smell like gas fumes after you're all done.

6. It's better for the environment.Gas lawnmower engines expel 10 times the amount of pollution per gallon of gas than your automobile does.

Sounds great so far, right?Well, before you click that "Add to Shopping Cart" button, let me give you two thoughts that might have you think otherwise:

1. The cord.Yep, there's no battery here, so you're attached to your house's electricity the entire time.In practice, I haven't found this too difficult to deal with; by starting near the outlet and snaking back and forth away from it, it's easy to manage.But, when I have to mow around my trees, it gets to be a bit of a chore.If I had a lot of tricky landscaping, or a particularly large yard, this would be enough to kill the deal.

(You can get electrical mowers with batteries, but they tend to be even more expensive than the gas mowers, and if you're choosing electric for environmental reasons, the lead in that battery is going to steer you even further away from that option.)

2. The optional mulching bag is small.If I'm collecting my grass clippings, I'll often need to empty the bag 8-10 times during a typical run.It gets to be pretty annoying.As a result, I usually just let the clippings return to the lawn, which is better for the lawn anyway, even if it doesn't look as pretty.

And there you have it.Six reasons to buy it, and two not to.You'll have to make your own decision.As for myself, I've been very happy with my purchase thus far, and will probably make my next mower a Black and Decker electric model as well.

My idea of lawn mowing has completely changed. What used to be a tedious, annoying task is now pleasant and relaxing, due to the ease of use and functionality of this mower. Out of the box, it is very clear how to put this mower together, and it should take no more than about 30 minutes to get the assembly done. Just remember to put some dishwashing detergent inside the rubber handle cover before you slide it on. Then you're ready to go. The height adjustment, which is located near one of the rear wheels, is very easy to access: you simply push a lever in and slide it to the correct height level. The height levels are clearly marked right on a dial (a lot easier than having to get out your wrench and screwdriver for most gas-powered mowers). In actual cutting, this mower is very smooth. With minimal energy, the blades spin with good speed and torque, easily cutting the grass down to size. I have a somewhat weedy lawn, and I was concerned that this mower might bog down, but it cuts everything with the same smoothness. My lawn also has several uneven spots, but this mower handled that nicely as well. The rear wheels keep the mower balanced as you push it. If you push faster, of course, the blades will run faster. However, at a casual pace, the blades definitely spin fast enough to take care of a typical lawn. I have even "let my lawn go" a couple of times this summer (it grew to about 6" in height at one point), but the mower handles it just fine. As you're mowing, you'll notice that there is a lot less dust flying around, no smell of fumes, and you can listen to birds and natural sounds the entire time you're outside. This reel mower cuts the grass more cleanly for sure -- you can see that the grass is greener when you're done, without brown tips. When I cut my lawn, I leave the cuttings there and allow them to mulch into the soil. The mower is light enough to lift and carry into a storage area. You don't have to keep oil and gas around, so this mower takes up the minimal amount of space. Here are the only disadvantages to this mower: (1) You can only get about 6" to an edge; (2) If a stick gets into the blade, you have to stop and pull it out; (3) You will not be visiting the local lawnmower repair shop every season for a tune up, spark plugs, air filter, and any number of other unpredictable problems. Since I started using this mower, several people have asked me if it's more difficult to use, if it's slower, or cuts worse. I assume potential buyers are asking the same questions. I will venture to say that it is actually JUST AS EASY TO USE A REEL MOWER AS IT IS TO USE A GAS-POWERED MODEL. There is NOTHING about a gas-powered mower than makes it easier to use, and gas-powered mowers do not save any time, espcially when you consider all the peripheral needs of owning one. Overall, this is an example of a simple, low-tech solution to a common need.
