(More customer reviews)I had been looking for this type of grass catcher for quite some time and at the right price. Each time I found it, it was close to $100.00 and so I thought that I'd try second-hand stores and yard sales but never found any and plus, 17" grass catchers were tricky to find. I tried Ebay and still nothing. Finally, I found it on Amazon for half the price of local gardening stores. It was initially out of stock but Amazon informed me by email when they had it availiable. The catcher fits perfectly on my McLane lawnmower and does it's job of grass catching superbly. It seems very durable and I hope that it lasts for a long time. The shipping was very fast and I am very satisfied with my product and would recommend this item and my experience with Amazon to anyone. Thanks.

Neuton Battery Electric Lawn Mower Review

(More customer reviews)I was committed to purchasing an electric lawnmower.Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of options and even fewer reviews so was hard to decide!Ultimately went with the neuton and have been very happy.It is extremely light and easy to maneuver and turn which is great b/c we have a couple of hills and narrow spaces on our lawn.I was worried b/c it is more narrow than some mowers (maybe 14"?) but that hasn't been a problem at all; in fact, it makes many parts of the yard easier to mow.Charges quickly and we haven't had any battery problems.Never ran out of charge on our small lawn (takes about 45").It is quiet (not noiseless, but I can cut early in the morning without waking the neighbors) and cuts well.I'm thrilled not to have a cord, and it is easy to start and stop.Haven't used the mulcher or any other fancy accessories (the local sales guy said not to bother with buying those).

I would buy this again without hesitation and would recommend to others.I didn't give it 5 stars only b/c there are so few cordless electric mowers to choose from in 2005 that I can't imagine this is yet the model of perfection, but for the average small lawn owner (like me), it's a great machine.

Addendum 7/2006: now in our second season and no complaints.We love this machine; it was a great purchase for us.
Addendum 9/2007: third season, great machine. Now that I've seen its durability, I would give this product 5 starts (Amazon won't let me change my original rating).
Addendum 6/2009: fifth season, still totally satisfied with this machine.Blade became "unbalanced" and needed repair in year 4.Battery still going strong (we keep it plugged in all year).

What I like:

- Light weight.Light enough to manuever with one hand while the other hand tends the cord on turns.ALSO, this holds easily going across an incline, rather than up, which is hard on the lower back, or down, which is hazardous.

- Height adjustment is spring-loaded, and counter-balanced just right.Raising and lowering cutting height is quick and easy.It lowers in a snap from preferred lawn cutting height to its lowest setting for grass or leaves on the drive or street, whichquickly turn to near dust for ease of blow-off.

- It mulches great across the lawn; much, much better than the last 2 gas mowers I've owned.That's probably more due to design than power source -- but the mulching is the point.The clippings from one week's growth just disappear.And the St. Augustine grass common here in Florida doesn't mulch as easily as the bluegrass of Kentucky, as memory serves.

- A metal cutting deck, rather than the plastic offerings from a couple of competitors.

I can't speak to how well the bag works; haven't tried it.Bagging is a waste of time, effort, and fertilizer, imho ...

Drawbacks:

- uhhh ... It doesn't make enough noise to wake the neighbors.(Long story ...)

The padding on the handle is not durable.Not at all.But I see some padded bicycle handlebar tape in its future.

I'm outdoors, I can hear the birds, there is the smell of freshly cut grass but there is not the hammer of a small gasoline engine, the odor of hydrocarbon combustion nor the annoying trailing of a power cord. Mowing dry grass or even moist grass after a light morning shower here in the mountains of New Mexico becomes pleasant outdoor exercise approaching recreation.The folding handle is elegant but one must take care during assembly to understand how it works so that one does not damage it during assembly. There is ample instructional caution on this point. The carrying handle is comfortable and equally handy to carry this lightweight unit folded or unfolded.The folding handle itself doesn't help me with storage and I leave it locked in the unfolded position but if you have a vertically tighter space than I it could be ideal to reduce the height of the stored unit by half. Edging, mowing around sprinkler heads, and over irregular surfaces or buffalo grass hummocks will require repeated passes in more than one direction, other hand tools and patience to achieve a manicured appearance (but these limitations are not unique to this mower). My grass here in the arid West does not have the density I grew up with behind a gasoline mower in the humid South but I would love to try it back there. I think it would still prefer over a gasoline mower for a smooth lawn of less than half an acre frequently cut. I am raking the clippings and I do not know if a grass catcher is available. The blade clearance was perfectly adjusted out of the box cutting a piece of paper as described in the instructions as cleanly and effortlessly as a pair of scissors. Adjustment of cutting blade to blade and cutting height is easy without tools. This unit replaced a Sears Craftsman reel mower. It is half the weight, 3 times the cutting efficiency, much more easily stored, more rugged, far more precisely engineered and pleasant to use.

I bought this mower because it could leave the grass 4" deep.I keep my lawn at 3" so I have to water less frequently, and I wanted an inch of play in case I forgot a week.I also liked the guide wheels in front, and the solid look of the mower.

The mower was a pleasant surprise for two reasons:

1.It was EXACTLY as easy to push as the rechargeable mower.It turns out that the energy needed to spin the sharp blades is the same as the energy needed to shove a battery and electric motor around the yard.I had thought I'd get more exercise with a reel mower, but the exercise was the same.

2.The assembly instructions were THE BEST assembly instructions I've ever seen.As someone whose easily confused by the slightest ambiguity in instructions, I appreciated the ease of assembly.

I've been mowing more frequently lately, and have been willing to do it at 7AM because there's no motor sound to wake my family.The mower is fun to use and my lawn looks great.

(More customer reviews)First for a frame of reference, I like and prefer the manicured appearance that only a reel mower can provide, and I have the Brill Lexus battery powered, made in Germany, which I have been using for several years. The Brill is good to excellent in its construction, but it lacks the power to cut through very thick grass when its mechanical bypass device kicks in and the reel stops turning as the mower makes a raucously loud and annoying ratcheting sound.The Brill works well, but my experience is that it lags and can't keep up in the spring when the grass has a greater moisture content.In contrast, the All Power reel mower is made in China, and it's design and materials reflect its cheaper price.Where it excels, is that it is much more powerful than the the Brill.However, like most electric mowers, it will be overwhelmed with grass that is growing rapidly and is full of moisture after several days of Spring showers.As mentioned by other reviewers, the plastic parts are minimally constructed and won't stand up to hard use. You will curse the plastic height adjustment. It's shoddily designed and constructed, but it can be made to work if you are able and willing to fiddle with it and if you don't try to make frequent height adjustments.(Once when I was using it in heavy, thick, damp grass, the adjusting device (rollers) fell completely off and had to be reinstalled.)At that point I got special approval from Amazon to return the mower, but in the end I decided to keep it because it fits a need in the set of tools I use on my lawn, which also includes the largest Neutron rotary mower and the cordless Black and Decker.In other words, except for the smallest of lawns or in a dry climate, this mower is insufficient, but it does make the lawn look manicured and most of the the time has the power to do that.Mowing time is much better than the Brill, probably twice and I have an extra battery for the Brill.Lastly, for some reason the AP mower showers your legs with clippings much worse than the Brill, but I think that is because it is much more powerful and spins faster.

American Lawn Mower 1415-16 16-Inch Hand Push Reel Mower Review

(More customer reviews)I've used one of these for about fifteen years,a slightly earlier model 1414-16.

It's been a very good mower.It is very easy to push, and cuts very nicely. Solid metal, yet deceptively light.Its pretty easy to maintain.Oil the bearings annually, and sharpen the blade every year or two.Once you've done it once, sharpening the blade takes about 30 minutes, a screwdriver and a wrench and some valve-lapping compound,and is pretty easy (about the same complexity as assembling a new kids bicycle), but is greasy.That's all you ever have to do.Fifteen years later mine cuts as well as the day I bought it.

I like to think I'm getting more exercise, but the truth is that because of its light weight and good cutting mechanism, its no more effort to push around than a gas mower (if you don't let your grass get too long......).

The only problem I've had is that you have to frequently tighten the nuts holding on the wheels.

If you haven't had a push mower before, a couple of caveats:It does cut more cleanly than a gas mower, but you do usually have to make two passes.Also, you have to keep current with mowing.If you let the grass get too long, you are REALLY going to sweat to cut your lawn the first time. Also, it really won't cut bermuda-type grass very well at all.

The blades are still sharp.It's lightweight.I can mow at night or in the morning and not worry about the noise bothering anyone.I'm single and I love that I never have to worry about it not starting!It cuts the grass beautifully.Another girlfriend just bought one and is thrilled with hers as well.

The only annoying thing is that if you are carrying the lawn mower for whatever reason, as in I have to lift it from my garage up my cement steps to my yard, the handle sometimes unlatches off the mower part. There should be a clip or something to keep the handle hooked on, but there isn't....

I adjusted it, and it worked ok. I went to make another adjustment, and the head of the bolt snapped off. Got a Fiskar to replace it, and it works great.

No more lawnmower fumes and heat in my face.
Cutting my lawn is now very quiet.
My hands are no longer tingle from the vibrations coming from my old gas powered push mower.
Sturdy handle design.This is very important.
Very easy to assemble and use.
Very small footprint, easy to store.
Virtually maintenence free.

Cons:
This mower DOES NOT like tall thick grass.You'll really have to push hard to get it to go through thick grass and will probalby have to go over what you just cut a second time to make the lawn look manicured.
If you fertilize your lawn you'll need to cut it about every other day.Like I said this mower does not like tall thick grass.
If you have any large mature trees in your yard this mower is not for you.You'll spend too much time picking up very small twigs that otherwise will get caught in the mower blades and bring you to a sudden stop.
Little bumps in the lawn have a tendancy to bring the mower to a stop.
Brill could have made cutting high grass easier if this mower was capable of cutting at a higher leangth then what is available.

Other observations:
The size of your lawn doesn't matter as long as it is fairly smooth and not too hilly.
Don't throw away the little metallic strip that comes with the mower. This is your blade gauge and will cost you $10 to replace.
Overall if your in good shape and have patience with this mower you should be okay.The most improtant suggestion I would make is that you hold on to your gas mower to keep your grass under control when rain prevents cutting, otherwise you'll be in for a shoving match with this mower.

First, my co-workers were skeptical about an electric mower, but I've had the experience in the past.
Here are some of the benefits:
- you can look under your mower by flipping it over and not worry about gaz or oil leaks.
- grass is cut from end to end of a yard easier with the flip handle than those that don't. (that should include all gaz mowers) Instead of closing in on the middle of your lawn, you start on one end and finish at the other end.(I like it)
- this mower doesn't retain anything underneath. I didn't know that some mowers would do that.From my previous experiences, you had to clean up the mower every couple of use.
- height adjustment is super simple.
- electronic brake.If you release the power (bar!), the blade stops in a micro second.This is great for safety.
- no smells of any sort (except first few minutes being a new electrical product)
I wouldn't trade it, and my yard is not small.

The mower is quiet and efficient and I can manage to cut even tall grass with it. Sticks must be removed first of course. I expect to use the mower for many years.

No fumes, no noise, good exercise. Why would anyone want a conventional mower.
When I had a larger yard, I used a Black & Decker rechargeable electric mower - and a reel mower for touch-ups. That was a good combination.

I am still a bit taken aback at the price on reel mowers... butafter using it, I understand.
This is no flimsy hunk of aluminum andplastic. This is a nice heavy chunk of metal.The blades will stay sharpfor years.It made short work of my lawn and was NOT tedious to pusharound.The reel spins smoothly and is pleasant to listen to... compare itto the din of gas mowers.
I've already had a neighbor ask me where Igot it.
I gave this mower only 4 stars instead of 5 because:
1. The Thandle was difficult to attach to the reel.I had to whack at it with ahammer to get it into the correct position on the reel.
2. It does NOTwork well on taller grass.Anything too tall just gets rolled over.(Incentive to keep the lawn in check.)
But these negatives do notoutwiegh the positives.
Overall, I'm glad I got it!

2.It was incredibly easy to start this thing - insert key and lift lever.

3.No mess, no gas, no oil, no air filter.The only maintenance described in the service manual is blade sharpening (once to twice per year) and battery replacement. (Possible two years?).

4.Charging the unit is as easy as charging a cell phone and it charged up overnight.It had enough juice to mow my 1/3rd acre lot with heavy spring weeds that were also a little wet without running out of battery juice.

5.It was very easy to clean.Just disconnect the key and then you can turn it over to clean the blade and guard without worrying about oil or gas spilling.

6. It's easy to disconnect handle and mulch bag for storage.

Negatives:

1. Although it's not incredibly heavy, it's not as light as my 5HP gas Craftsman mower.Since there's no self-propelling feature, it can get heavy if you had to go up hills - my lawn is relatively flat so no problem there.

2.The unit is basically plastic.It has a cheap feel to it - although I'm sure it would be too heavy if it was metal.

3.There's really nothing protecting the battery underneath the top cover and it's barely held there with a nylon strap.

4.The paper instruction manual is worthless.It has very little information in it and it's hard to read because one section is written and you have to go to another part of the manual for the pictures.

5.The unit came with Styrofoam inserts that surrounded the battery.I had a very strong feeling that these inserts were for shipping only and must be removed before operating the unit.However, there is nothing in the manual that states this either way and I had to figure it out for myself.

6.There are no instructions for how to replace the battery - you are instructed to take it to a service dealer.Perhaps they could have put more effort into the documentation.

7. The mulching bag doesn't seem to hold much grass.I had to empty it three times before I was done mowing.

All and all, I love this mower.I hated having to jack with gas and oil and filters and maintenance of gas mowers.Plus, this thing is relatively quiet compared to my gas mower.I recommend it.

(More customer reviews)This item is not for everyone.If you have a relatively small, healthy yard that is free from debris then it will probably work for you.I am not a connoisseur of grass, but the variety I have has very slender, fine blades, and tends to flatten very easily (when walked upon, etc.).This is not a problem for a power mower, because the circular action of the blades works as a vacuum to pull the grass up before it is cut.The push-reel mower does not have that advantage, and grass that is not standing tall can easily escape the blade.Therefore, one pass does not yield an even cut, so it is usually necessary to repeat every pass from a different direction to get satisfactory results.For that reason, this item would not be very practical for a large yard.If your grass is of a thicker variety, as I think you may find more of in the south, then the mower would probably work more efficiently.
If you have large trees in your yard, you may want to consider the effects of the fallen leaves or twigs-this mower will not handle them as a power mower does.A small twig can stop it in its tracks...
There are several ways in which this item compares very favorably with a power mower.For instance, the maintenance is much less demanding-no tune-ups, refueling, oil changes, or fouled spark plugs, etc.Also it is considerably lighter and smaller than most gasoline mowers, and therefore much more easily stored.The operation is not silent, but is certainly much quieter than a gasoline engine.I find it easier to persuade myself to get out and mow-it seems less of a chore.And while the environmental consequences may be marginal, I'm sure there are those that find satisfaction in the fact that they may be making a difference in that arena, no matter how small...
The cost is not outrageous, but I might expect to pay a little less for what I got.The construction is sturdy enough, and the assembly was not much trouble (although my mower contained a defective part, I contacted the manufacturer and they shipped a replacement part very quickly).The grip on the handle does not take prolonged stress well, but otherwise I have had no problems.
Ultimately, I am satisfied with the mower.It does a pretty good job for what I need, but I can certainly see how its limitations might make it the wrong choice for some.Weigh the pros and cons carefully...
